Today we have welcomed local author Caryl Hart into school and she has been busy working with all of the children on their story writing skills. The day began with an inspirational assembly in which Caryl shared some of her published work with us, spoke about her journey to becoming an award-winning author and what inspires her work.
Throughout the day she did workshops with all classes. Whilst year 3 eagerly waited we were busy inventing machines to help Santa after listening to Caryl’s story ‘The Princess and the Christmas Rescue.’ The children’s imaginations ran wild creating all sorts of weird and wonderful contraptions!
After this activity we read a variety of traditional tales to inspire us for the story writing workshop in the afternoon with Caryl. We ‘magpied’ fairytale language as well as words and phrases to describe characters and settings.
When lunch was over Caryl came to give the Year 3s a masterclass in story writing. We loved asking her questions about her career as an author and then we enjoyed listening to one of her stories. Next, we played a game in which we had to create a story based on 5 random pictures. We had to be very creative and think outside the box to link them together and create an interesting storyline.
Finally it was our turn to be authors and create our very own original traditional tales to perform to the class. A great day had by all! Well done to all of the children for participating with such enthusiasm.
