Welcome to the 2025 Year 1 Class page; we hope you have had a lovely Easter break. Our topic for the Summer 1 term is 'Enchanted Woodland'. This Science project develops children's knowledge of garden plants, plant and tree structure together with deciduous and evergreen trees.

All of our learning is linked to books suitable for pupils' age and stage and to encourage reading for pleasure. We concentrate on a book each week; this term we are reading 'The Gruffalo', 'Stick Man' and 'The Oak Tree'. We will also be focusing on the traditional tales 'Hansel and Gretal' and 'Little Red Riding Hood'. We will continue to describe settings and will be writing fictional tales about beating the monster.

PE this term will take place on a Tuesday afternoon and children will be learning about striking and field games. On a Friday morning at 11am, children will be swimming at Ashbourne Leisure Centre (a separate email has been sent). Please make sure your child comes to school with a P.E. kit, which will remain at school until the end of the half-term, and a swimming kit each Friday morning.

Homework will continue, which will be linked to our class learning. Homework will be given out each Friday (alternating Maths and English), to be handed in on the following Thursday morning. Please continue to listen to your child read their phonic book daily and share their reading for pleasure book. Please also sign the reading record. Children reading red and yellow phonic books will have a bookmark (kept in school) and will take part in the reading reward scheme where daily readers can earn a Bronze, Silver and Gold reading reward badge.

The KS1 phonics screening check will take place during the week beginning Monday 9th June (More details to follow).

Please find attached at the bottom of the page our learning overview for this half-term together with the curriculum overview for the year.

In the event you did not attend the Meet the Teacher meeting, please see the PowerPoint presentation attached below.

Reading: We expect children to read every evening to an adult for about ten minutes every day and parents must sign the reading record. Children will be sent home with a phonic book (which is levelled at their current phonics stage) and a Reading for Pleasure book, which is to be read and shared with parents.

Please keep checking the website and Instagram for notices and to see photographs of the different things we have been up to during the school day!

Phonics Screening Check; Please find the Parent information regarding the Phonics Screening Check.
