At St Oswald’s C.E. Primary School we aim to inspire children with an enjoyment of maths and we aim to foster a ‘can do’ attitude to the understanding of the subject.
We wish to ensure that all children
- Become fluent mathematicians
- Are able to reason and explain mathematically
- have the ability to Solve Problems.
At St Oswald’s maths is taught as a daily lesson, within each class there are ability groups to ensure that the maths is tailored specifically for the individual child’s needs.
We believe in using a wide range of resources to support the children’s acquisition of mathematical concepts. We use Numicon resources to support children’s acquisition.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) children are provided with opportunities to practice and improve their skills in counting numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems as well as describing shapes, spaces and measures.
Math’s Scheme of Work
In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 we follow the White Rose primary scheme of learning, which is supplemented with Maths No Problem, Target Maths and Classroom Secrets. Children are encouraged to work with math’s partners and independently in most lessons with a strong emphasis on reasoning and problem solving, as well as fluency. The link below shows what math’s topics and objectives are taught in each year group and each half term.
