Welcome to the 2026/2027 Year 1 Class page!
We hope you have had a great summer break and are looking forward to a fantastic new year of learning. Our Autumn 1 topic is 'Dinosaurs' for the first five weeks, and then we touch upon the Victorian era and replicate a Victorian school for the following two weeks. The History and Geography project introduces pupils to Mary Anning, exploring the significance of her fossil discoveries and learning about prehistoric animals and time periods. Children will also learn about their own school and locality, both today and in the past, comparing schooling in the Victorian era to their experiences today.
All of our learning is linked to books suitable for pupils' age and stage and to encourage reading for pleasure. We concentrate on a book each week; this term we are reading 'Where the Wild things are’, ‘Ten little dinosaurs’, ‘Giganotosaurus’, ‘The dragon with the blazing bottom’, ‘Bumpus Jumpus Dinosaurumpus, ‘The girls and the dinosaur’ and ‘There is a dinosaur in my school’. We will also be focusing on the traditional tales 'Cinderealla' and 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'.
In PE this term, we will be concentrating on Gymnastics and Yoga. PE is in the school hall on a Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning. Please make sure your child comes to school with a P.E. kit, which will remain at school until the end of the half-term.
As per Reception, please continue to listen to your child read their phonic book daily (which is levelled at their current phonics stage) and share their reading for pleasure book. Please also sign the reading record. Children reading red and yellow phonic books will have a bookmark (kept in school) and will take part in the reading reward scheme where daily readers can earn a Bronze, Silver and Gold reading reward badge.
