Welcome to the 2025 Year 1 Class page. We hope that you have all had a lovely Christmas and New Year.
Our topic for the Spring 1 term is 'Bright Lights, Big City'. This History / Geography project develops children's knowledge about our capital city and the United Kingdom. Children will learn all about The Great Fire of London and will continue with some elements of continuous provision linked to the topic.
All of our learning is linked to books suitable for pupils' age and stage and to encourage reading for pleasure. We concentrate on a book each week; this term we are reading 'Paddington at the Palace', 'Paddington at St. Pauls', 'Romeo's view from the Shard', 'Katie in London' and 'Town Mouse, Country Mouse'. We will also be focusing on the traditional tales 'Dick Whittington' and 'Rapunzel'. We will be writing a journey tale based on our favourite story characters.
In PE this term we will continue with dance, which will be linked to the theme of weather and pirates. PE will take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Please make sure your child comes to school with a P.E. kit, which will remain at school until the end of the half-term.
Homework will start this term, which will be linked to our class learning. Homework will be given out each Friday (alternating Maths and English), to be handed in on the following Thursday morning. Please continue to listen to your child read their phonic book daily and share their reading for pleasure book. Please also sign the reading record. Children reading red and yellow phonic books will have a bookmark (kept in school) and will take part in the reading reward scheme where daily readers can earn a Bronze, Silver and Gold reading reward badge.
Please find attached at the bottom of the page our learning overview for this half-term together with the curriculum overview for the year.
In the event you did not attend the Meet the Teacher meeting, please see the PowerPoint presentation attached below.
Reading: We expect children to read every evening to an adult for about ten minutes every day and parents must sign the reading record. Children will be sent home with a phonic book (which is levelled at their current phonics stage) and a Reading for Pleasure book, which is to be read and shared with parents.
Please keep checking the website and Instagram for notices and to see photographs of the different things we have been up to during the school day!
Phonics Screening Check; Please find the Parent information regarding the Phonics Screening Check.
