Welcome to the Year 1 Class page. We hope that you have all had a lovely and relaxing summer holiday.
Our topic for the new Autumn 1 term is 'Dinosaur Planet'. This History / Geography project develops children's knowledge of prehistory. Children will learn about dinosaurs and fossils and the amazing discoveries that palaeontologists such as Mary Anning made. They will also learn about the seven continents and 5 oceans. In Science, we will be learning about which dinosaurs were carnivores, herbivores and omnivores and also learning about the basic parts of the body and senses.
During the last two weeks of the term, we will also be learning about Victorian Schools and the Victorian ERA.
All of our learning is linked to books suitable for pupils' age and stage and to encourage reading for pleasure. We concentrate on a book each week; this term we are reading 'Where the Wild things are', 'Ten little Dinosaurs', 'The girl and the dinosaur', 'Gigantosaurus', Bumpus, Jumpus, Dinosaurrumpus' and 'Dinosaurs in my School'. We will also be focusing on the traditional tales 'Three Billy Goats Gruff' and 'Cinderella'.
PE this term will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon (Gymnastics and Yoga). Please make sure your child comes to school with a P.E kit that is named which will remain at school until the end of the term.
Homework will start in the spring term. However, please continue to listen to your child read their phonic book daily and share the reading for pleasure book. Please also sign the reading record.
Please find attached at the bottom of the page our learning overview for this half-term together with the curriculum overview for the year.
In the event you did not attend the Meet the Teacher meeting, please see the PowerPoint presentation attached below.
Reading: We expect children to read every evening to an adult for about ten minutes every day and parents must sign the reading record. Children will be sent home with a phonic book (which is levelled at their current phonics stage) and a Reading for Pleasure book, which is to be read and shared with parents.
Please keep checking the website and Instagram for notices and to see photographs of the different things we have been up to during the school day!
